The Complete Guide to Hydrogen Water, Inhalation & Lifestyle Protocols

How a decade of experience shaped a three-pillar wellness system.

What Is Molecular Hydrogen Therapy?

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the smallest and lightest molecule in existence. That means it can reach tiny and otherwise unreachable spaces in your body. Over the past two decades, it has become the subject of growing scientific investigation for its potential therapeutic properties. A systematic review published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences analyzed 25 human clinical studies and concluded that preliminary results are encouraging for hydrogen's potential benefits in exercise capacity, cardiovascular health, liver function, mental health, and oxidative stress reduction.[1]

Hydrogen therapy involves introducing additional molecular hydrogen into the body, primarily through two methods: drinking hydrogen-infused water, and inhaling hydrogen gas through a nasal cannula. A comprehensive review in Antioxidants examining over 100 clinical studies noted that hydrogen acts as a selective antioxidant, targeting the most harmful free radicals (hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite) while leaving beneficial reactive oxygen species intact. This selectivity distinguishes it from conventional antioxidant supplements.[2]

Research remains in early stages, and no major medical guidelines currently recommend hydrogen therapy for any specific condition. However, the volume and direction of clinical research has generated significant interest in the wellness and biohacking communities.

Why Water Quality Matters in My Hydrogen Protocols

Not all hydrogen water is created equal. The quality of the base water, the method of hydrogen infusion, and the stability of the dissolved hydrogen all affect what you actually consume. Many commercial hydrogen products use standard filtered water as their base. However, practitioners who take water quality seriously argue that if the purpose of hydrogen water is to support the body's natural processes, introducing contaminants alongside the hydrogen undermines the goal.

Distilled water, produced through a process of evaporation and condensation, removes virtually all dissolved solids, heavy metals, microplastics, pathogens, and chemical residues. Carbon distillation (combining carbon filtration with distillation) adds an additional layer of purification. The trade-off is that distillation also removes naturally occurring minerals, which must then be reintroduced through supplementation (such as trace minerals, shilajit).

This is a deliberate design choice in structured protocols: start with the cleanest possible water, then add back only what you intend. Trace mineral supplementation using shilajit resin (which contains approximately 85 ionic minerals and trace elements including fulvic acid) and concentrated mineral drops allows for precise control over what enters the body.

Hydrogen Inhalation — The Other Delivery Method

While hydrogen water delivers molecular hydrogen through the digestive system, hydrogen inhalation provides it directly through the lungs and into the bloodstream. Clinical research increasingly suggests that these two methods may complement each other, as they deliver hydrogen through different pathways and at different concentrations.

Inhalation uses a specialized hydrogen-generating machine connected to a nasal cannula. The user breathes normally while the gas enters the lungs and diffuses into the bloodstream. Because molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and reaches tissues that water-delivered hydrogen may not access as efficiently.

A study published in Medical Gas Research examined hydrogen-oxygen inhalation in patients with sleeping issues and found improvements in sleep quality.[3] Multiple clinical trials have used inhalation protocols of 30 to 90 minutes daily, with some extending longer. Practitioners who use both methods report that inhaling hydrogen during meals appears to create a synergistic effect, though the mechanism behind this observation is not yet well understood scientifically.

The Three-Pillar Approach — Water, Nutrition, and Movement

Most hydrogen wellness products focus on a single intervention: drink this water, or use this machine. My Hydrogen Protocol takes a different approach. Developed over more than a decade of experience by Greg the Hydrogen Man, it integrates hydrogen water and inhalation into a broader lifestyle system built on three foundational pillars.

Pillar 1: Clean Water and Hydrogen

Important: The specific volumes, timing, and techniques for hydrogen water consumption and inhalation are critical to the protocol's effectiveness. This guide provides a general overview, but the precise, step-by-step instructions — including the bolus technique, inhalation-during-meals protocol, and daily scheduling — are only available through the My Hydrogen Protocol app. Attempting the protocol with incomplete information or unsuitable equipment may reduce results and could pose risks.
  • Water source: Exclusively distilled water, ideally produced through carbon distillation.
  • Hydrogen infusion: Distilled water is infused using the Lourdes Hydrofix, a Japanese-manufactured device known for producing stable, high-concentration hydrogen nanobubbles.
  • Intake timing: Hydrogen water is consumed in boluses of 0.5 to 1 liter, drunk relatively quickly (within 5–10 minutes). This occurs up to three times daily.
  • Trace minerals: Reintroduced via shilajit resin (dissolved in water each morning) and concentrated ionic mineral drops added to smoothies.
  • Hydrogen inhalation: Users inhale hydrogen gas via nasal cannula for 30 to 90 minutes daily, with specific emphasis on inhaling during meals.

The rationale for using distilled water rather than filtered or spring water is based on lab testing showing that even high-quality filtered water can contain microplastics, pharmaceutical residues, and other contaminants. See the specific equipment used in the protocol →

Pillar 2: High-Fiber Nutrition

The nutrition pillar is structured around two primary meals:

  • Daily smoothie: A high-fiber, vegetable-dense blend made with approximately 50% dark leafy greens (spinach, kale, chard), plus whole carrots, beets, broccoli, celery, berries, chia seeds, nuts, and supplemental powders (chlorella or spirulina, boron, Vitamin D3/K2). The smoothie is blended with hydrogen water.
  • Evening salad: A large raw salad featuring lettuces, sprouted seeds, avocado, beans, sauerkraut, and herbs. No commercial dressings, added oils, or salts.
  • No snacking between meals. Defined eating windows with hydrogen water consumption in between.

The dietary framework is heavily high-fiber but customizable. The standard protocol restricts animal products, processed foods, bread, refined sugar, and added salts and oils. However, users who need or prefer animal protein can incorporate clean meats (beef, chicken, eggs, fish, bone broth), By contrast, pork and shellfish are specifically excluded.

Pillar 3: Daily Movement

The movement pillar is intentionally simple: a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes of continuous, steady walking daily, preferably outdoors. This is not a fitness regimen. It is a baseline requirement for circulation, lymphatic function, and the daily movement that the protocol considers essential for the other two pillars to function optimally.

Casual movement around the house does not count. The protocol requires sustained, continuous walking as a daily goal.

What Users Report — Outcomes from the Field

Hydrogen Man has observed that approximately 95% of people who try the protocol adopt the water and hydrogen components but struggle with the full dietary overhaul. Even partial adoption (clean water + hydrogen only) appears to produce noticeable results, though full protocol adherence produces the most dramatic outcomes, according to Hydrogen Man’s opinion.

How This Differs from Other Hydrogen Products

The hydrogen wellness market is crowded. Portable hydrogen water bottles, hydrogen tablets, alkaline water ionizers, and various inhalation devices compete for consumer attention. My Hydrogen Protocol approach differs in several structural ways:

  • System vs. product: Most hydrogen products sell a single device or supplement. This protocol is a structured lifestyle system that integrates water quality, hydrogen delivery (both drinking and inhalation), nutrition, supplementation, and movement into a coordinated daily routine.
  • Water purity emphasis: Many hydrogen products work with whatever water the user has. This protocol starts with distilled water specifically because the purity of the carrier affects what you're actually delivering to your body.
  • Dual delivery: The protocol uses both hydrogen water (drinking) and hydrogen gas (inhalation), which clinical research suggests may address the body through complementary pathways.
  • Hydrogen tablets vs. machine-generated hydrogen: The protocol specifically avoids hydrogen tablets and portable hydrogen bottles. See why equipment selection matters →
  • User-centered: The protocol was developed over a decade of direct observation of individuals, not created as a product launch.
A note on doing it yourself: People frequently attempt to reconstruct the protocol from YouTube videos, social media posts, or AI-generated summaries. In Greg the Hydrogen Man’s experience, this consistently produces poor results. Users who piece together partial information tend to use the wrong equipment, get the timing wrong, skip critical steps, or modify the protocol in ways that reduce or eliminate its effectiveness. The official Hydrogen Man Protocol — with every detail in the correct sequence — is available exclusively through the My Hydrogen Protocol app.

Safety Considerations and Who Should Consult a Doctor

Molecular hydrogen is generally recognized as safe. A systematic review noted no significant adverse effects in the clinical trials analyzed. The FDA has granted Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status to hydrogen water for human consumption.

However, the broader protocol involves significant lifestyle changes that may interact with existing medical conditions:

  • Kidney function: The protocol involves consuming up to approximately one gallon of water daily in rapid boluses. This may be contraindicated for individuals with kidney disease or those on fluid-restricted regimens. Consider also daily fluid and nutrient recommendations of the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine: https://www.nal.usda.gov/human-nutrition-and-food-safety/dri-calculator
  • Medication interactions: The sudden increase in dietary fiber, raw vegetables, and rapid fluid intake may alter gastric motility and the absorption rates of certain oral medications.
  • Mineral and electrolyte balance: Because the protocol uses distilled water with manually added trace minerals, healthcare providers should review supplementation levels against any dietary or health restrictions.
